The Oceanic Humans interview series is a storytelling project by Surface Interval, created to shine a light on people across the globe who embody the spirit of the ocean—everyday individuals whose lives are shaped by their relationship with the sea, whether through surfing, diving, paddling, photography, creativity, or quiet appreciation.
In each feature, we dive deep into their stories to uncover: 💙 What the ocean means to them 💙 How it’s shaped their purpose 💙 What they’re doing to protect it.
These are the stories that inspire us to live slower, tread lighter, and connect more deeply—with the ocean, and with each other.

At Surface Interval, we’re always looking for people who live the ocean—not just visit it. People who lead with purpose, move with intention, and make decisions that reflect their love for the natural world.
Akash Shetty is one of those people.
How did you get started with Stand-Up Paddling (SUP)?
“I won’t sugarcoat it—everything changed for me after just one session, nearly nine years ago, at Mantra Surf Club. That first time on a paddle board opened up a whole new world I didn’t know I needed.”
SUP became more than a sport—it became his sanctuary. A way to return to balance, find peace, and move with meaning.
What does the ocean mean to you personally?
“To me, the ocean is home. It’s where I feel the most alive and most at peace. It humbles me, grounds me, and challenges me all at once.”
Whether he's paddling, surfing, or simply floating in silence, the sea reminds Akash of what truly matters. It's where problems shrink, clarity expands, and connection deepens.
How has the ocean influenced your approach to fitness and training?
“The ocean taught me to move with purpose, adapt to challenges, and stay connected to my body. It’s why I focus on functional fitness, breath work, and mental endurance.”
Akash doesn’t just train for aesthetics or numbers. His approach to fitness is fluid, mindful, and deeply influenced by nature—just like the ocean.
What’s your vision for the future of SUP in India?
“My dream is to create an academy that trains and mentors young paddlers with world-class coaching, equipment, and global exposure. With SUP heading to the Olympics, India should be part of that story.”
For Akash, it’s more than sport—it’s about legacy. Building a culture of water-based sports and environmental awareness from the ground up.
How can someone try stand-up paddling for the first time in India?
“Just go for it! You don’t have to be super fit or an expert swimmer. Find a certified school or coach, start on calm water, and don’t be afraid to fall—that’s part of the fun.”
SUP is one of the most accessible entry points into the ocean world. All you need is a little curiosity—and the courage to stand up.

Can you share a moment on the ocean that deeply impacted you?
“Seeing 15 dead turtles along our coastline in just 10 days broke my heart. I couldn’t stop crying. That moment changed me. I haven’t eaten seafood since.”
This powerful encounter deepened his commitment to sustainability and ocean advocacy. Real impact, he says, comes from conscious choices.
If you had to describe your connection to the ocean in one word, what would it be?
“Sacred. Because the ocean isn’t just water—it’s healing, growth, challenge, and peace. It’s where I feel most grounded and most free.”
What connected you with Surface Interval?
“What connected me with Surface Interval was the heart behind the brand. It wasn’t just about creating products—it was about creating change. Their values around sustainability, ocean conservation, and intentional living felt like an extension of my own beliefs. It’s rare to find a brand that truly walks the talk, and the fact that it’s rooted in India made it even more special for me.”
Akash Shetty lives the values that Surface Interval was built on:
💙 Sustainability in every action
💙 Movement that connects mind, body, and sea
💙 Courage to challenge harmful systems
💙 Purpose-driven living, from the shoreline to the city
Surface Interval was born out of a love for the ocean—and a desire to give back to it.
